LONGEVITY TIPS
- Avoid drum linings
that are bonded or glued to the brake shoe. Select linings that are riveted to
the shoe.
- Replace drum brake shoes before linings are worn
down to rivets. Exposed rivets will gouge the brake drum and necessitate
its expensive replacement as well.
- Do not stop your car abruptly in reverse.
Brake shoe tolerances with the drum surface are set by the
self-adjuster when brakes
are applied in reverse. Abrupt stopping could damage the self-adjuster.
- Always brake gently during the first few hundred
miles of new brake use.
- Do not apply your brake pedal when a brake drum has
been removed or the wheel cylinder will come apart.
- Always apply your parking brake before turning off
the engine, but depress the brake pedal first.
This lets you more firmly set the parking brake. Use the parking brake
even when the car is on level ground. Keeping the brake linings in contact with
the brake drums will prevent them from absorbing moisture or rusting.
